Major Boost to Water Security as State Approves Cauvery Stage VI Project

Bengaluru, February 27, 2026:
The Karnataka Government has approved the Cauvery Stage VI drinking water project, a major infrastructure initiative aimed at supplying safe and reliable water to nearly 30 lakh people in and around Bengaluru. The decision was taken during a recent Cabinet meeting as part of the state’s efforts to strengthen urban water security.

Project Objective: Expanding Water Coverage

The Cauvery Stage VI project is designed to extend Cauvery drinking water to rapidly growing residential and industrial areas on the outskirts of Bengaluru. These regions have faced acute dependence on groundwater and private water tankers due to limited piped supply.

Officials said the new phase will ensure long-term sustainability and support the city’s expanding population.

Key Areas to Benefit

The project will supply treated Cauvery water to several urban local bodies and surrounding towns, including:

  • Devanahalli
  • Hoskote
  • Nelamangala
  • Vijayapura
  • Chikkabanavara
  • Madanayakanahalli
  • Bashettihalli
  • Hunasemaranahalli

In addition, major residential layouts such as Kempegowda Layout and Shivarama Karanth Layout will also receive improved water connectivity.

Project Cost and Infrastructure Plan

The total cost of the Cauvery Stage VI project is estimated at around ₹7,000 crore. The plan includes:

  • Construction of new pumping stations
  • Water treatment facilities
  • Large reservoirs
  • Transmission pipelines to outer urban areas

About 130 acres of land will be required for project infrastructure, including balancing reservoirs and service stations.

Funding and Implementation

The project report has been prepared by the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB). The state government is exploring financial support from international funding agencies along with state resources to execute the project in phases.

Authorities said implementation will begin after land acquisition and tender processes are completed.

Building on Earlier Cauvery Stages

Cauvery Stage VI follows the launch of Stage V, which recently added significant water supply capacity to Bengaluru’s system. With the new approval, the government aims to further strengthen drinking water availability and reduce seasonal shortages during summer months.

Boost to Urban Development

The project is expected to play a crucial role in planned urban growth, enabling housing development, industrial expansion, and better living conditions in peripheral areas. Officials noted that dependable water supply is essential for balanced development and public health.

Long-Term Vision for Water Security

State leaders said the Cauvery Stage VI project reflects the government’s long-term vision to ensure water security for future generations. By reducing pressure on borewells and promoting surface water usage, the project is expected to improve groundwater levels and environmental sustainability.
