Bengaluru: In a move aimed at boosting non-fare revenue and enhancing commuter convenience, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has announced plans to develop retail and commercial spaces at seven metro stations across the city. The initiative will open new leasing opportunities for businesses along major transit corridors, including prominent stations such as Sampige Road and KR Market.
Retail Spaces to Be Introduced at Key Metro Stations
According to BMRCL officials, the upcoming retail outlets will be developed within station premises and concourse areas, making use of available space for commercial purposes. The stations identified for the first phase of expansion include Sampige Road, KR Market, Yeshwanthpur, Banashankari, Madavara, and Pattandur Agrahara, among others.
These locations have been chosen based on passenger footfall and commercial potential, particularly in high-density and market-oriented zones of the city.
New Commercial Leasing Opportunities
The project will invite private vendors and business operators to lease retail spaces through a tendering process. The commercial units are expected to host a mix of services such as convenience stores, food and beverage outlets, pharmacies, and lifestyle retail shops.
Officials stated that this initiative aligns with BMRCL’s strategy to diversify revenue sources beyond ticket sales while also providing essential services to daily commuters.
Focus on Transit-Oriented Development
Urban transport experts note that integrating commercial activity within metro stations supports the concept of transit-oriented development (TOD). By transforming metro stations into activity hubs rather than just transit points, the city can encourage economic activity and improve accessibility to services for thousands of passengers each day.
Stations such as KR Market and Sampige Road, which already witness heavy commuter traffic, are expected to benefit significantly from the addition of organised retail infrastructure.
Improving Commuter Experience
BMRCL officials said that the planned retail facilities will enhance the overall travel experience by allowing commuters to access daily necessities, refreshments, and essential services during their journeys. The presence of organised retail is also expected to improve station ambience and safety through increased activity and surveillance.
Revenue Boost for Metro Operations
The commercial expansion is part of BMRCL’s broader plan to strengthen non-fare revenue through leasing, advertising, and property development. Similar models adopted by metro systems in other metropolitan cities have helped reduce dependence on fare collections and improve financial sustainability.
Next Steps
BMRCL is expected to issue tenders shortly for interested businesses and developers. Once leasing agreements are finalised, interior development of the retail spaces will begin in phases. The rollout is likely to take place over the coming months, subject to approvals and construction timelines.
With Bengaluru’s metro network continuing to expand, the introduction of retail and commercial spaces at stations marks a significant step toward creating integrated transport and business hubs across the city.
